Oldest Bald Eagle – Killed.

The oldest Bald Eagle on record was killed earlier this year after being struck by a car in New Brunswick, Canada. Biologists recently discovered the Bald Eagle was banded in Maine in 1977 after investigating the metal band found on one of its legs – making this bird at least 3 years older than me!

There are other reports of Bald Eagles over 30 years of age which suggests that their populations are responding well to the habitats available to support them in eastern North America. It also means that Bald eagle populations have recovered from pesticide-induced lows of the 1960s and early 1970.

Santa Fe, NM

It was chilly and blustery, albeit sunny, in northern New Mexico this weekend. On Saturday afternoon we visited the Randall Davey Audubon Center just outside of Santa Fe. There were several Townsend’s Solitaires flying around the parking lot as we pulled up. Many of the other regular stuff, such as Black-capped Chickadee, Dark-eyed Junco (Oregon and Pink-sided), etc.

On Sunday we decided to make the 2.5 hour trek northward to Maxwell National Wildlife Refuge which was only 25 or so miles from the Colorado border. Within a few moments I immediately found a Northern Shrike. Lots of other winter raptor specialties included Ferruginous Hawk, Golden Eagle along with 2 adult Bald Eagles and 1 juvenile. And I must say, at least 200+ Mountain Bluebirds!! I guess this is *THE* place and time to go if you want to see them.

Antelope Valley Raptors

Did some raptor hunting up in the Antelope Valley yesterday with a couple friends. The weather was gloomy and overcast throughout the day with rain here and there. Although we didn’t find any Rough-legged Hawks or Golden Eagle we had 1 Prairie Falcon, 1 imm. Bald Eagle, 5+ Ferruginous Hawks, 6+ American Kestrel, 2 Northern Harrier and 20+ Red-tailed Hawk.

We checked various ponds/lakes along the way where I got a few new photo birds (Hooded Merganser, Black Scoter and Lawrence’s Goldfinch). We also searched the A&G sod farms (110 St. East / East Avenue M) for Mountain Plovers and any Longspur sp. but to no avail. We did see hundreds of American Pipit, Horned Lark and Killdeer though.
