SPECIES INFO

The Cuban Kite, Chondrohierax wilsonii, is a bird of prey in the family Accipitridae which also includes many other diurnal raptors such as kites, eagles and harriers. It is endemic to Cuba.

This species is classified as critically endangered by BirdLife International. The current population is estimated at less than 250 mature birds and lack of recent records suggests it may even have been one of the first vertebrate species to go extinct in the 21st century. Attempts to find a remnant population are currently (2005/2006) ongoing but have not yet located surviving birds.

It is considered by some authors to be a subspecies of the Hook-billed Kite.
