SPECIES INFO

The Guianan Puffbird (Notharchus macrorhynchos) is a species of puffbird in the Bucconidae family. It is found in forest and woodland in north-eastern South America in far eastern Venezuela, north-eastern Brazil, Suriname, Guyana and French Guiana. It formerly included N. hyperrhynchus as a subspecies, but under the common name White-necked Puffbird (the name now used for N. hyperrhynchus). The two differ markedly in bill-size (N. hyperrhynchus larger-billed than N. macrorhynchos), plumage (among others, N. hyperrhynchus has less black to the flanks and more white to the forecrown than N. macrorhynchos), and voice. Consequently, the two were separated by SACC in 2004. As presently defined, the Guianan Puffbird is monotypic.
