The gray hawk was seen well on the telephone lines over the entrance to Seaside
Gardens nursery on Via Real about 12:00 noon. Shortly after informing a cluster
of birders on Santa Claus Lane of its location and their departure to find it,
the bird was seen flying low over Santa Claus Lane being mobbed by a few crows
until it dropped out of sight behind the main cluster of businesses near the
large cypress and Canary Island pine.
About 1:00 p.m., Joe Morlan and I saw the hawk fly from the east into the
eucalyptus trees behind the Rincon Beach Club where it was observed and
photographed over 5-10 minutes when it flew west parallel with the railroad
tracks. Joe, Eric Weir and I refound the bird sitting on the short sign in the
vacant lot behind the chain link fence between the cluster of businesses and the
purple clothing store. After a few minutes, the bird flew east parallel with
the railroad tracks.
