SPECIES INFO

The Fiji Whistler (Pachycephala vitiensis) is a species of bird in the Pachycephalidae family, which is endemic to Fiji and the Santa Cruz Islands in the Solomons. It is variably considered a subspecies of a widespread Golden Whistler (P. pectoralis) or treated as a separate species, but strong published evidence in favour of either treatment is limited, and further study is warranted to resolve the complex taxonomic situation. On the contrary, it has been suggested that the Fiji Whistler, as usually recognised, actually should be split into two species, the White-throated Whistler (P. vitiensis) including the taxa where the male is white-throated, and the Fiji Whistler (P. graeffii) including the taxa where the male is yellow-throated. It has been speculated that these two groups are the result of separate waves of colonisations, with the former being the result of an early colonisation, and the latter the result of a secondary colonisation.
