Originally described as a distinct species, it is usually treated as a subspecies of the Chestnut-throated Apalis today; e.g. BirdLife International revised its status to subspecies in 2008.
Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist montane forests. Its status is insufficiently known; when it was still considered a good species, it was classified as Data deficient by the IUCN with the remark that it might be considered a threatened taxon.
